MOTHER AND SON STUDY TOGETHER AT IRT COLLEGE DURING ADULT LEARNERS' WEEK
A mother and son who share study notes are this week among the thousands of Australians celebrating Adult Learners' Week. Suzanne and Mitchell Petersen are both currently enrolled in courses at IRT College that will support careers in aged care. The pair both enrolled because they have a passion for caring for others.
"I always wanted to do something like this, so at age 39 I signed up to IRT College and I've loved every minute of it," Suzanne said.
Suzanne is currently in the process of a Certificate IV in Aged Care while Mitchell, a Year 12 student at Illawarra Sports High School, is completing a Certificate III in Aged Care.
"The aged care industry interested me, so while at school one day I asked about IRT College and signed up on the spot," Mitchell said.
Mitchell, 18, has carried our work experience at IRT Links Seaside in Wollongong, while Suzanne is currently undertaking training at IRT William Beach Gardens at Kanahooka.
The pair frequently share notes from class at home which is helping with their studies.
"It's good because there's parts of the course I understand better than mum, and there's parts she understands better than me, so we help each other a lot," Mitchell said.
"Being able to share ideas with Mitchell is great, and while I want him to have his independence, I could definitely see us being able to work together in aged care when we finish our studies," Suzanne said.
Each year, Adult Learners’ Week is celebrated with hundreds of events and activities designed to promote the benefits of learning – in the home, at work and in the community – and to highlight the many options available.
Adult Learners’ Week also provides an opportunity for informed discussion about the current provision of adult learning in Australia and to consider what improvements are needed to take Australia forward.
